funny how in late autumn

the fading azalea bush

ekes out

a couple of crimson blooms

like making popcorn

in the microwave

and after it shuts off

a few more kernels

insist on popping

(well, that's not exactly

comparable, but)

it's the evidence of life,

long after its turn with time,

showing—

life force a force of its own

out of intentional control—

remembering there's always

an unexpected bloom to be had

to be seen
